in collaboration with: Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk
This year will mark the fourth edition of the artist&curator residency exchange project based on cooperation between LAZNIA CCA, Fondazione Modena Arti Visive and the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, in the frames of “Incubator” programme at LAZNIA CCA. Students and graduates of new media disciplines as well as – this year – also curator studies (in Modena), will have an opportunity to participate in a residency, take part in classes and make use of the resource base of art universities from Modena and Gdańsk. Previous editions of this bilateral exchange program involved the following participants: Justyna Aksinowicz, Chiara Di Loreto, Izabela Rakowska, Tommaso Valli, Julia Jachowicz and Matilde Piazzi, while this year’s residency of Polish artist in Modena is conducted by Alicja Sukiennik.
We are pleased to announce that as a result of this year's call addressed to students and recent graduates of the curatorial studies at FMAV, the jury in Gdańsk and Modena chose Chiara Spaggiari to conduct an artist residency in Modena. The residency stay will take place in April 2024.
Chiara Spaggiari (Sassuolo, 1995) – is a Ph.D. student in Communication Sciences and Digital Culture at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. She has studied Philosophy and Visual Arts at the University of Bologna, graduating with a thesis on Semiotics of the Visible. She uses an interdisciplinary approach to reflect on images, artworks, and visual communication media, between semiotics, sociology, and art history.
Since 2017, Chiara Spaggiari has been involved in curating, with an interest in the work of emerging contemporary artists within independent spaces, first as a curating assistant (Porto dell'Arte, Bologna, via del Porto 34; International Laser Print Show, Wopart - Work on paper Fair - Lugano, Switzerland), then as a co-curator (Disegni accomodati di Giuseppe De Mattia, Damslab, Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini in collaboration with Mambo for Artcity 2019; in the lecture series Laboratorio di Arti Visive- Frameworks, at DARUniBo). Since 2021 she is a co-director of the independent curating project Marktstudio based in Bologna. Since 2020, she has been writing for the magazine Critical Cultures- Tropico del Cancro.
She attended the School of Photography-Spazio Labò (Bologna) and the ICON course for curators at FMAV-Scuola di Alta Formazione (Modena).
Chiara Spaggiari about her curatorial interests:
“My path in the history of art and images began with an initial interest in the medium of painting and developed over the last four years towards a focus on photography. This led me to the study of media in artistic works, regarding re-mediation and transmediality. In recent months, I have become interested in artificial intelligence related to images and the visual arts. In my curatorial research work, I mainly explore the projects of young and emerging artists, poetics, and research formally intriguing as well as intellectually valuable and mature. I am also very interested in artworks with political-social content or intention, in the speculative possibilities that some projects allow to emerge in this sense.”
The residency takes place as part of LAZNIA CCA’s "Incubator” programme aimed at presenting and promoting young art. By showcasing its most interesting manifestations, it reveals the new language of art. It is meant to make audiences and curators aware of the enormous potential of the emerging generation of artists. The programme is open to debate and entails individual and group presentations that are conducive to an exchange of experience. We want the “Incubator” to serve as a confrontation platform for the young art scene and to contribute to research on emerging trends.
